Common questions

Is Bill Kristol left or right?
Kristol spent decades as an architect of the Republican establishment — chief of staff to Vice President Dan Quayle and founder of the neoconservative magazine The Weekly Standard — before becoming one of the most prominent Never-Trump conservatives from 2016 onward. He is now editor-at-large of The Bulwark, director of the anti-Trump group Defending Democracy Together, and host of Conversations with Bill Kristol, and his commentary is devoted almost entirely to opposing Trump, whom he argues threatens liberal democracy. He retains hawkish neoconservative instincts on foreign policy, welcoming talk of a "neocon revival" during the 2025 Iran debate. In May 2026 he posted on X that because he is "pro-freedom, pro-law and order, pro-limited government," he now identifies as a Democrat — completing a decade-long migration from GOP insider to explicit alignment with the Democratic coalition.
