Chris Cuomo positions himself as an anti-partisan centrist: since joining NewsNation in 2022 — after CNN fired him in December 2021 over his role advising his brother, then-Governor Andrew Cuomo, during a harassment scandal — he has framed his show CUOMO as a home for voters unaffiliated with either major party, saying "extremes are not America's majority." He explicitly rejects the Democratic label he was long associated with at CNN, and has said he takes criticism from both sides as validation, telling one viewer "I am for the majority not the toxic partisans." That distancing sharpened in June 2025, when his brother lost the New York City Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani and Cuomo declared the Democratic Party "dead"; Andrew Cuomo went on to lose the November 2025 general election to Mamdani as an independent.
