Common questions

Is Christopher Rufo left or right?
Rufo is an activist of the institutional right — a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, contributing editor of City Journal, and distinguished fellow at Hillsdale College — best known for making "critical race theory" a national political issue in 2020-21. His strategy is explicitly to move policy, not just commentary: his campaign helped prompt a 2020 presidential executive order and CRT-related legislation in more than a dozen states, and as a DeSantis-appointed trustee he helped lead the conservative overhaul of New College of Florida (a public-records lawsuit over that takeover was settled in May 2025, with the college paying $125,000 in legal fees while admitting no wrongdoing). In July 2025 he organized the "Manhattan Statement" on higher education, a blueprint for using the current political moment to restructure universities, and he received the 2025 Bradley Prize, a major award in the conservative movement. He aligns with the wing of the new right that believes conservatives should actively use state power to recapture institutions rather than simply defund them.
