Longwell is a political strategist and publisher of The Bulwark, the center-right, anti-Trump outlet she co-founded in 2018, and she founded Republican Voters Against Trump and the Republican Accountability Project, which spent millions opposing Trump in 2020 and 2024. Once a mainstream GOP operative (she chaired the Log Cabin Republicans board until resigning over its 2019 Trump endorsement), she said in April 2025 that she no longer considers herself a Republican because the party no longer reflects her beliefs. She has moved beyond a purely 'Never Trump' frame: her focus-group work now argues for sustained electoral defeat of the MAGA-era GOP, and her first book, 'How to Eat an Elephant' (due September 2026), is pitched as a playbook for building a coalition to defeat the MAGA movement.
