Is Shaun King left or right?
King sits on the activist left, well to the left of the Democratic establishment, with roots in the Black Lives Matter movement: he co-founded the Real Justice PAC in 2018 to elect progressive prosecutors, launched The North Star publication in 2019, and co-founded the Grassroots Law Project in 2020. Since the October 2023 Gaza war began he has reoriented almost entirely toward pro-Palestinian advocacy — in 2026 he spent most of the year fundraising for Gaza before announcing in June that he would return to full-time writing and reporting via The North Star, now a Substack. He is a polarizing figure even within the left, having repeatedly faced accusations of mismanaging donor funds, which he disputes. His politics have stayed consistently movement-left; what has changed is the cause at the center of his output, from US policing to Gaza.
